Another amazing release from this always impressive label - a 124 page hardback book plus 2CDs of 44 audio recordings featuring the results of folklorist Alan Lomax’s visits to Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman in 1947, 1948 and 1959. During these visits he documented the lives of black inmates by taking photographs of them labouring by day and playing music in their breaks and evenings. The book has 77 arresting photographs (many reproduced here for the first time) along with essays by Alan Lomax and others. The CDs feature an incredible collection of blues, spirituals, work songs and hollers, again many unreleased previously. A staggeringly good set.

A massively-enlightening 176-page hardback book containing 159 full colour photographs from the collection of Sarah Bryan. These photos were all taken by Sarah Bryan and Peter Honig in a sweep from deep in the Appalachian mountains through to the cotton and tobacco lowlands as part of a search for evocative music and images of the pre-war American south.
