THE ROOTS OF BOB DYLAN (3CD&DVD)

PROPER (PROPERBOX150)

Charlie Poole, Frank Hutchison, Kelley Harrell, Buell Kazee, Gus Cannon, Bo Carter, Dick Justice, Sleepy John Estes, Prairie Ramblers, Ink Spots, Merle Travis, Lonnie Johnson, Frankie Laine, Davis Sisters, Odetta, Hank Williams, Tampa Red and many more...

Here's another of those fascinating Proper boxes with 3 CDs of tracks that inspired the artist and a DVD in which experts talk about the music and career of the musician.

This time it's Bob Dylan's turn and as you'd expect, the sixty tracks are headed by Woody Guthrie, Blind Willie McTell, Charlie Patton and Hank Williams as well as some unexpected material from Danny & The Juniors, The Ink Spots and The Davis Sisters.  Good to see that the compilers have included a few songs that galvanised Bob into writing some of his biggest masterworks - Chuck Berry's ‘Too Much Monkey Business' was obviously the blueprint for ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues', The Bentley Boys old-time scorcher ‘Down On Penny's Farm' inspired ‘Maggies Farm' and Lightnin' Hopkin's ‘Automobile Blues' was the model for ‘Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat'.  Mix that lot with some of the songs he's covered, like Lonnie Johnson's ‘Tomorrow Night', The Stanley Brothers ‘Man Of Constant Sorrow' and Dick Justice's ‘Henry Lee' and you've got a cracking collection of great vintage American roots music.

The DVD ‘Talkin' Bob Dylan' features interviews and opinions of various experts and observers of His Bobness. These are Michael Gray (Dylan chronicler), Sid Griffin (late of the Long Ryders and musicologist), Joe Boyd (record producer and sound man at the legendary Newport fiasco), and Mike Marqusee (Dylanologist) who has perhaps, the most interesting views.

Great little presentation - not only for Bob fans but also for anyone wanting to hear a really good selection of vintage American roots music.
